2024 Promising CNCF Sandbox Cloud Native Projects
Since its inception in 2015 with Kubernetes, the CNCF landscape has expanded to host hundreds of projects, driven by more than 200,000+ contributors representing 189 countries—making it easy to get lost in its ever-expanding ecosystem of cloud-native tools.
The CNCF supports three main project types:
Sandbox Projects: Early-stage projects focused on new ideas and experimentation.
Incubating Projects: Mid-stage projects with growing usage and stability.
Graduated Projects: Mature projects that are widely adopted and ready for production use.
Today, we focus on 2024's most promising picks from 25+ sandbox projects accepted so far.
1. OpenEBS
⭐: 8,981+
OpenEBS manages the storage available on each of the Kubernetes nodes and uses that storage to provide Local or Replicated Persistent Volumes to Stateful workloads.
2. Score-Spec
⭐: 7,799+
Score-Spec is a platform-agnostic workload specification that can be run against a Score implementation (CLI) like score-compose or score-k8s to generate platform configuration files, such as docker-compose.yaml or Kubernetes manifest.yaml files.
3. Cartography
⭐: 3,000+
Cartography is a Python tool that consolidates infrastructure assets and the relationships between them in an intuitive graph view powered by a Neo4j database.
4. Bank-Vaults
⭐: 2,053+
Bank-Vaults is a Vault swiss-army knife: a K8s operator, Go client with automatic token renewal, automatic configuration, multiple unseal options and more.
A CLI tool to init, unseal and configure Vault (auth methods, secret engines). Direct secret injection into Pods.
5. LoxiLB
⭐: 1,490+
LoxiLB is an open source cloud-native load-balancer based on GoLang/eBPF with the goal of achieving cross-compatibility across a wide range of on-prem, public-cloud or hybrid K8s environments.
Here is how these projects were loved over time:

While most sandbox projects progress to incubation within 2 to 3 years, many projects remain in the sandbox for much longer.
Maturity isn’t necessarily dependent on the time a project spends in the sandbox.
Keep exploring; the CNCF has become a dense jungle now.
