How AWS Handled 2024 Prime Day’s Record Breaking Traffic
As a cloud architect, it's always fascinating and equally interesting to see how AWS manages the huge scale behind Prime Day.
From the services involved to the sheer volume of requests handled, every year brings new milestones.
This below image speaks volumes about the huge scale. Point to be noted, these numbers are just for one service—EBS.
This led to curiosity: what would it be for the other ones?

And I analyzed the numbers and the services involved in the 2023 and 2024 Prime Days, and here I present them for you (happily 😊).
Prime Day 2023 vs 2024 by the Numbers
2023: Tens of millions of normalized AWS Graviton-based Amazon EC2 instances powering 2,600 services.
2024: Over 250K AWS Graviton chips powering 5,800 services (double of 2023) and 80,000 Inferentia and Trainium AI chips (introduced in 2024 Prime Day).
2023: 163 PiB storage, 15.35 trillion requests, and 764 PB data transfer per day.
2024: 264 PiB storage (62% increase), 5.6 trillion I/O operations (64% increase), and 444 PB data transfer (81% increase).
2023: 5,835 instances, 318 billion transactions, 2,140 TB data stored, 836 TB data transferred.
2024: 6,311 instances, 376 billion transactions, 2,978 TB data stored, 913 TB data transferred.
2023: Trillions of API calls, peaking at 126 million requests per second.
2024: Tens of trillions of API calls, peaking at 146 million requests per second.

2024: quadrillions of requests, peaking at 1 trillion requests per minute.

Jeff highlights the importance of preparation for Prime Day. AWS ran 733 Fault Injection Service tests to ensure Amazon.com stays resilient.
